October Athlete of the Month: Mirsad Hairlahovic!
I am a proud first generation Canadian. I spent the majority of my life, and all of my adult life, in Canada. I was born and raised in Bosnia and Herzegovina. I’m married to an awesome lady, Kassandra, who is just the best. Professionally, I’m a Civil engineer by training and I’m a VP for a large international construction company. I look after some of the largest construction projects across Eastern Canada.
Competition was always part of my life. Early on with my brother and cousins, always looking for a higher level of competition while playing sports, and through my professional life. With CrossFit I get to compete with myself and CrossFit helps me level off the demands of my professional life. I am a firm believer that CrossFit makes me a better and a more productive person.
I was introduced to CrossFit by a friend from Edmonton in 2007. Slowly I played around with it in regular gyms and my first opportunity to be a box member came in 2011. That’s when I joined CrossFit Newmarket Central. In 2015 we moved downtown a couple of blocks away from 416 and I walked through the door to check it out shortly after that while walking from Billy Bishop airport. What I see as the greatest aspect of 416 to me is that from equipment, through programs and programming, through accommodating personal goals, as a box there is always a commitment to improvement, which helps me in my current goal which is working on being a more rounded CrossFitter.
A WOD I would create would be:
10 Min AMRAP
6 Hang Power Snatch (115/75)
9 Burpees over the bar
One of my fondest memories of 416 is very recent and it was the look of accomplishment and happiness on Kassy’s face when she did a 200# squat. It reminded me why we all like this CrossFit thing so much.
