November Athlete of the Month: Crystal Gabriele!!
I’ve lived in Toronto for most of my life. I moved downtown 7 years ago when I started working for a bank. I was getting real bored with running on a treadmill and my friend Vanessa told me to give CrossFit a try. She’d been doing it for several months and loved it. So I decided to try 416 with her. I was hooked right away. It was intimidating, especially since every class shone a bright light on how absurdly weak I was, but everyone was always friendly and encouraging. 5 years later, I’m not as weak and I’ve made a ton of friends. Instead of being an intimidating place, the gym has become an extension of my home. I love it!
My proudest moment was probably my first muscle up. It was my first open and the WOD started with muscle ups (not ideal). I can’t describe much else, I literally closed my eyes and somehow I was above the rings when I opened them. I finished the workout with one rep. LOL.Now I’m working towards a 200lb back squat and a 115lb snatch. Oh how times have changed.
My ideal WOD? AMRAP Naps. And I would name it after myself.
Oh this is a good one – my favourite 416 memory comes with a bit of a back story. I was a member at GoodLife before. And for years random members would approach me and ask me if my sister worked there. Growing up with only one older brother you can imagine my confusion. Fast forward to my first day of my elements classes, Rachel was my coach. And I forget how it came up but I told her about it. To my surprise, her response was “oh my god, people say that to me too! They always ask me if my sister works out there!”. That’s when we realized everyone thought we were sisters before we had ever met.
