January Athlete of the Month: Jason Kleiss!
I was born and raised in the USA. My wife and I moved to Toronto about 3 and a half years ago, and now we are half-Canadians (i.e., permanent residents). I’m a tax attorney that specializes in US-Canada M&A. In our industry, we consider taxes as “leakage”, and so most days I feel like I’m just a fancy plumber trying to help clients like Mr. Peters (aka the other Jason) move capital in and out of the US with minimal “leakage”.
Before CrossFit, I did…not much. Once upon a time I used to play baseball, then law school happened, and life as a junior associate at a big firm happened, and fitness was replaced by long stints of sitting in a chair staring at a computer screen. Then one day my wife, being the considerate and proactive person that she is, first told me that I had gotten fat, and then handed me a one month trial to a CrossFit gym that she had already purchased on Groupon. No discussion necessary. “What is CrossFit and why did you choose it?” I asked her a bit dumbfoundedly, “Oh, it was simply the best deal available, 50% off the regular price”. Jokes on her now that I am a CrossFit addict.
Now that I’ve been a member at 416 for over 3 years now, I’ve had a lot of great memories, and quite frankly can’t really imagine what else I would do at 7 in the morning. I’ve enjoyed all the member’s comps, the opens, the PR gold stars, and all the “likes” for my WODs (mostly from Simone). But I’ve enjoyed the friendships most of all, from partnering with Saleh every Saturday for the better part of 2 years, to our great 7 am crew.
I’m going to become a father this May, so my CrossFit goals this year will be relatively simple – don’t quit the gym post-delivery day. It’s really cool and inspiring that our gym is full of so many examples of new parents that can still find the time to keep working out.
I’ve been trying to pitch a movie day WOD ever since I learned Marek hasn’t seen Terminator, so if I could create a WOD it would be called “Judgment Day”, where we play Terminator against the white wall and with rowers facing the screen we could do some rowing and planks while we let the movie take our minds off the pain.
